How To Return To Wonderland and My Opinion on the Doctor

The First Page

This week I wanted to start out by telling you what it is I really love about comic books. Maybe your love of comics is completely different than mine and that’s totally cool. We can be into the same thing for different reasons.

For me there are two major things that draw me to comics.

The story. Comics today are so well written and no disrespect to DC or Marvel, but the indies are putting out some damn good stories for us to read. Want to read an updated version of a classic?

Zenescope has you covered on several fronts with their Alice in Wonderland series focusing on an adult, and very messed up in the head, Alice Liddle. Alice has a family of her own and eventually her teenage daughter Callie takes a trip through the looking glass. Definitely think more of the Tim Burton version on very powerful steroids. They also have the Grimm Fairy Tales Series. No spoiler on this. Just read it!

The power. How did this hero get their power? Did they earn it? Were they born with it? Did they seek it out or did the power seek the user? There’s nothing wrong with your Superman types who get their power from a different sun, I like a good story when it comes to a character.

Give me a ring seeking out Hal Jordan (not Ryan Reynolds) because he was a good person. Let me see people such as a ragtag team of Guardians of the Galaxy or a man like Doctor Strange, who went out seeking to heal himself and came out a hero.

Last and certainly not least, ya gotta give me Scott Lang, the Ant-Man. That guy tries to do the right thing, keeps screwing up, but always comes through in the end, even if he totally does need the Wasp to watch his back!

On a slightly unrelated note, I’m very excited to be starting my Not Weird Just Autistic autism podcast later this month and one of my first guests is the creator, artist and writer of Bully Wars, Skottie Young!

Review

Doctor Who #1

You’re gonna be surprised when you read this, but as much as the nerdy side of me wants to enjoy it, it’s not worth it. It’s not BAD, but the comic reads exactly like a script for the show. It’s almost like I’m having Sunday in my head with a bad Jodie Whittaker accent.

The supporting cast is drawn amazingly, but truth be told, the Doctor character could use a touch-up and some extra work. It’s not a “bad” comic book, but it gives me exactly what I get on TV each week. I’ll save my $3.99 a month for now as I have a few new series starting after the first of the year.  If you’re a true Doctor Who fan and not someone like me who just started watching the show, you may very well like the comic.

The bottom line?  It’s probably a great read for the die-hard Doc Who fans out there, so give it a shot and see what you think.

Character Profile

Alice & Callie Liddle

Alice Liddle is a bit, well, disturbed. I mean, you would be too if you had fallen down a rabbit hole as a small child and done some crazy, crazy stuff. She’s all grown up now and has a daughter, Callie, who unknowingly is going to end up taking a similar journey, this time, literally going through the looking glass in Alice’s closet.

Alice can’t function, Callie doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not and the whole story is crazy, fun, well-written, and yes, a bit gory at times. The craziness that young Alice’s trip to Wonderland puts on her family shows a truly dysfunctional family.  Their continuing adventures through the looking glass and into Wonderland make for a great read!  I’m not sure if Lewis Carroll would be proud, but as a writer I can totally get behind the amazing work that’s done on these pages.

It starts off with Return to Wonderland, then moves onto Tales From Wonderland Vol. 1, Beyond Wonderland, Tales From Wonderland Vol 2, House of Liddle, Escape From Wonderland, Tales From Wonderland Vol 3, Alice in Wonderland, Down the Rabbit Hole, Through the Looking Glass, Call of Wonderland, Madness of Wonderland, Wonderland 1-4, Asylum, Clash of Queens, Age of Darkness Vol 5, Wonderland 5-10, Birth of Madness, Revenge of Wonderland (current series).

The Back Cover

There’s not much left to say because I have a tableful of trade paperbacks and new comic books to get through, but get into your local comic shop and see what they have to offer. With all the independents out there now, there is literally something for everyone.  In the next couple weeks we’ll look more at kids comics as the holiday season draws near.

See ya next issue.

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
